BLACK CULT is a quintet from Rijeka in Croatia. “Cathedral of the Black Cult” is their second material, they previously released the album “Neo-Satanism” in 2014. The BLACK CULT Croatian should not be confused with the black metal band from Brazil with the same name, nor the BLACK KULT from Bolivia. The cover of “Cathedral of the Black Cult” is trivial. He uses the same image of Baphomet repeated over and over on devil plates. You could try for a more ingenious graphic design, adding a very good disc in terms of music.

And the music of Croats is extreme black-metal, but technical, difficult and varied. It is not about playing a few riffs through the whole album and monotonous, incomprehensible vocals. Aggression prevails, but rhythms and melodies change constantly, brutal fragments are interwoven with slower ones, these slowdowns are often heavy, including in “Until the Devil Takes Us”. The lead guitar repeatedly plays melodic motifs, which in combination with the aggression of other instruments gives an interesting effect – an example of “Dark Matter”. Some songs are based on a galloping rhythm, including “Hierophant”, also a cover of MOTÖRHEAD “Kingdom of the Worm”. This cover is played in a much more aggressive way than the original, but Lemmy would definitely like it because it maintains a high level.

Almost every track contains a melodic heavy-metal solo, this element works great, enriches the compositions. The drummer is very good, he plays broken rhythms, he does not spare in every song. The vocalist’s singing is aggressive, but clear and expressive, brings a lot to the music on the album. The “Ego Te Absolvo” issue uses a short piano part and a wide range of the screams of the damned, constituting the background for the instruments, and at the end of the song pure Gregorian style singing.

All musicians are perfectly harmonious, the production is clear but the atmosphere of the album is dark and overwhelming. “Cathedral of the Black Cult” is a well thought-out album. The band knows what they want to play and can do it. I recommend this album to any fan of extreme metal.
